In any democracy the people and the government enter into a contract: the people contract to pay taxes and obey the laws and in turn the government contracts to spend those taxes to the benefit of the taxpayers. Such benefit would include providing infrastructure, administration, military protection from foreign invasion, law and order, health-care, social security, state pensions, etc.
The United States however spends significantly more more per-capita on health-care than any other country in the world and spends more on the military than China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, UK, France, Japan, Germany and South Korea combined!
Ever wondered why? After all, shouldn’t an advanced society be an efficient society? Apparently not… The reason is simple. These two industries provide by far the easiest pathway for politicians to steal your money.
Have you ever wondered how Nancy Pelosi (to take one example) has a personal net worth of $150 million? (See link) Her entire working career has been in government service, collecting a government salary. She is just one example. Every individual in the Senate and House of Representatives have obscene personal fortunes.
The pharmaceutical companies are granted leave to massively overcharge for their drugs by politicians who receive huge kickbacks in the form of donor and campaign bribes. American made drugs are sold in Canada for a small fraction of their US price. A bottle of insulin costs $450 in the US, the same bottle in Canada will cost you just $21 (see link). Who picks up the tab? You do and for those fortunate enough to be able to afford health insurance – the insurance companies. However let’s not feel sorry for the health insurance companies, thanks to the steadfast resolve of the establishment politicians to never allow state-provided health-care, the insurance companies are free to charge whatever they like. They take in premiums, keep a fat chunk of change for themselves and pay out as little as they can get away with. And due to an almost total lack of regulation of their fraudulent activities they can deny coverage to claimants on a whim. And they do. Every day. In return for these favours they shower the politicians with corrupt donations and kickbacks. Not to mention they spend lavishly on TV ads on the cable TV networks that are loyal to this corrupt cabal of fleecing the taxpayer.
The same with military spending. The money spent on the military isn’t being paid to soldiers, they make a pittance, nor is it being handed to veterans or war-widows, there are over 5,000 homeless veterans in the US “Almost half of the 2.2 million troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan report difficulties on their return home, but many receive inadequate care from the US Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs” (see link). No, the money is instead handed to the large aerospace companies in the form of government contracts that net them obscene profits in exchange for corrupt bribes, backhanders, campaign contributions etc. There is no oversight or regulation in place to prevent this. Each B2 bomber built cost the US taxpayer 2 billion dollars. A single Patriot missile costs between $2m and $6m and an S400 missile launcher costs $300m. And of course the US buys thousands of them. With spending like this there’s plenty of room for backhanders that transform a government employee into a multi-millionaire.
Ever wonder what happened to the Republican party in the age of Trump? Remember fiscal conservatism? Christian family values? Why has the Republican party abandoned all its principals and values and become a cult of personality to a grifting, Russian-loving, fiscally irresponsible, philanderer and serial cheater? The answer is MONEY of course. Gaining a seat in either house of the United States congress is like winning the lottery and even one squeak of dissent against Trump will result in them being primaried and kicked out. Who is willing to rip up that hot ticket? Nobody. So they look the other way while the free press is demonized, public civility and discourse is trashed and while the once-prized democracy is mutated into a dictatorship.
Now, with the 2020 democratic presidential primaries upon us the establishment Democratic party is, as it did in 2016, going all out to knobble Bernie Sanders. A three-line whip was issued: “get behind Biden or else.” Why? Because Bernie Sanders proposes cutting the military and health industry fleecing of the American taxpayer and actually spending that money transparently on the taxpayers and the country rather than hand it to global companies whose shares are owned all over the world. He wants to remove all this corruption and money from politics and from political campaigns and he terrifies the corrupt Democrats as much as he does the Republicans because essentially, aside from some minor fluff, they are identical. Political campaigns should be funded by small contributions from actual voters not by the millions of dollars from huge corporations. All the while politicians are working for their corporate donors there will never be proper government or democracy in the United States.
